For the HTML outline export you can setup one or more format styles. Compendium comes with one 'Default' format style to get you started. For each format style you can set a variety of formatting elements to determine the look of the HTML which is produced on export. These are effectively changing settings in style sheet which is at the top of each exported page.
Below is an example of the HTML Format dialog window. This can be accessed by pressing the 'Create / Edit Format' button which can be found on the 'Web Outline Export' dialog's 'Format & Contents' tab.
The Format Style is a drop-down menu displaying the current styles which exist. Compendium comes with a format called 'Default', so initally this will display 'Default' and the Default format style properties will be displayed in the dialog.
The Format ID relates to the name of the file that the format is saved to in System\resources\OutlineStyles folder. This allows you to locate the correct file should you wish to exchange style formats with other Compendium users. For user created formats the file name will be a world wide unique number with the file extension '.properties'. For example if you create a style the id could be '137108251921173972102138' so therefore the format file would be'137108251921173972102138.properties'.
The Format Node Data, held in the central table, contains the style data for formatting the node information. Tthere are seven blocks of elements for which you can set formatting information. The first is the 'Heading' of the page. The following six are for up to six possible levels of view depth which you may be exporting, (that is a map within a map, which itself is within another map etc..). View depth greater than six, will currently use the setting for level 6.
In each of these blocks, there are seven basic page elements:
|
Element |
Description |
|
Label |
This element represents the node label. |
|
Detail |
This elements represents the detail page text in a node. |
|
Detail Date |
This element represents the detail page date. |
Reference |
This element represents the reference field associated with reference nodes. |
Author |
This element represents the author information for a node. |
Tags |
This element represents the tags associated with a node. |
Views |
This element represents the views a given node appear in. |
For each of these elements, there are seven properties that you can set:
|
Property |
Description |
|
Left Margin |
This preference specifies how far in from the left edge of the HTML page, this page element will be indented. The number you enter will be interpreted as being in inches. |
| Top Margin | This preference specifies how much of a gap will be drawn above the current element. This therefore controls the page spacing of the elements vertically. The number you enter will be interpreted as being in inches. |
|
Font |
This preference allows you to select the font you wish to use for this element. |
|
Size |
This preference sets the size of the font you wish to use for this element. |
|
Style |
This preference sets the style of the font used for this element. |
|
background |
This allows you to select the background colour to be used with this element. Clicking on this table cell will open the Color Chooser dialog. |
|
text color |
This allows you to select the colour of the text used for this element. Clicking on this table cell will open the Color Chooser dialog. |
All your formatting settings will be saved each time you change them, and loaded again next time you open the HTML Format dialog window.
In order to assist in setting all the options in the table more quickly, there are three buttons below the table which provide the following shortcuts:
|
Button |

In the Format Navigation & View Divider section you can set the properties of the Navigations menu (if you choose to include it in the export), and the colour of the dividing line used between Views (if views are not exported to separate files).
The menu properties you can set are the font elements used for the menu items, the colour of the menu background, and the colour of the menu border.
The final part of the dialog to discuss is the button bar at the bottom of the dialog. The table below described the function of the buttons:
Button |
Action |
Save |
This will save any changes made to the currently displayed format. It will set the current format as the one to use for the export, and it will close the dialog. |
Save As |
This will save the current format data into a new file. You will be shown a small dialog asking you for the name of the new format (which must be unique). It will not close the dialog. |
Delete |
The will delete the currently select format. Note: you cannot delete the 'Default' format. |
| Cancel | This will close the Formatting Dialog without saving any changes made to the currently displayed format. |
| Help | This will launch the Compendium help and open this page. |
Once you have set any export options and formatting properties you wish to, you press the 'Export' button (see figure 1). This will open a file browser window, similar to the one in figure 9, below.
You then need to specify the file you wish to export to, either a html file for the top file, or a zip file if exporting to zip, and then press 'Save'. The export process will then begin. The time this takes will vary, and will depend on the number of views you are exporting, and the depth to which you are exporting them. There is currently no progress bar shown, so please be patient.
